Date a guy who reads. You will know he is a guy who reads because you often find him reading. Give away, that one.
Date a guy who reads because he will appreciate a well-turned phrase and give you time to formulate the perfect thought. It could be he is is easily distracted and busy reading the storefront sign across the street, but take it as a patient kindness nonetheless.
Date a guy who reads so that he’ll laugh when you say, “A woman walks into a bar and orders a double entendre. So the barman gives her one,” and not just to be nice. He’ll see the humor even in something that genuinely silly.
He’ll never be able to claim he can’t read those manuals for electronic devices. Or the instructions. Or recipe books.
Date that guy because he’ll care enough to avoid peanut butter while reading because it gums the pages — even if he can’t quite abstain from the Cheetos that leave those orange smears along the edges of the book. But at least he is adding color to your life.
Date a guy who reads because every opened book shows a desire to keep learning, growing, stretching the imagination and the soul. He burns when you discuss those new discoveries and trips. He is as much in love with the strangeness of this world as with the ones under the covers.
He won’t freak out when you talk about Elizabeth Bennett, Harry Dresden, and Rincewind like they are real people. He’ll just nod ask after their friends.
Date a guy who reads because when you admit — voice low so only he can hear — that you had loved the Lord of the Rings movies but hated the books, he’ll try to persuade you of your error. He’ll list all the positives of Tolkien, with diagrams and charts and waving hands. And that, while doing nothing to convince you the whole Tom Bombadil section was necessary, shows the passion of the man who holds your heart.
Date a guy who reads because, come evening, he appreciates the pleasure of silence, of sitting in the same room reading.
But don’t date the guy because he reads. Date him ‘cause he’s cute and smart and makes your life burn brighter. The reading bit is just a bonus.
Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve. Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that…
